Why your First Touch is so Important

If there were ever one skill to master, this would be it

I have spoken a fair bit about the first touch in previous blog articles and videos but I just wanted to reinforce why it is so important. Your first touch is everything, it determines how much time you have on the ball and where you are able to take the ball. A player with a weak first touch will find the game of football so much more difficult play.

In my training program featured on the site you will find ways in which you can improve your first touch. But why should you give it priority over everything else? Because if you are able to bring the ball under control instantly, you give yourself more time to execute on the next movement in play. Quite simply, it makes football easier.

A great first touch will set up your very next movement and take you in the direction you want to go. If you need to bring the ball under control quickly and deliver a pass, a quality first touch is a necessity. Your first touch can set up a quick fire shot on goal or put you in space to break away from your defender. It is literally everything in football and if you look at the best players in the world, they all have a great first touch.

So focus your training around this. Make sure you spend at least 30 minutes every single day training your first touch. Use a wall, make it your best friend and repeatedly pass the receive the ball with it. Over time, you'll begin to perfect the skill of the first touch and you'll be surprised how quickly you jump ahead of the players you're surrounded by.
