Tips for an Attacking Winger

2 Tips To Become An Effective Winger

Attention all attacking wingers, read these two tips if you want to have more of an impact on the pitch!

1) Focus on your movement off the ball

In my opinion, this tip has been the secret to the success of Manchester City's Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane this season. Pep Guardiola has changed one thing about their game dramatically, they now run in behind the defenders a whole lot more! As a defender this is the last thing you want. When your opposing player continues to go short and has to take you on, it's an easier job for you.

Although as wingers we all like taking players on and getting around them, you can be much more effective when making creative runs in behind the defence. You also offer more options for the midfielders in your team and if you have creative players in these positions, you will certainly reap the rewards.

2) Take on your defender at speed, without hesitation

Effective players all have one thing in common, they are direct and move quickly when there is an opportunity. When you do have an opportunity to take on a defender, do it without hesitation! Second guessing yourself is exactly what your defender wants. Don't give him what he wants!

When you are direct and move at pace, your defender has to make quick decisions and can get easily caught up in confusion with his fellow teammates. Making rapid movements at pace is the key to breaking down the opposing defence so do this every chance you get. Don't dwell on the ball and wait for something to happen, make it happen at pace and you will create far more opportunities.
