Pep Guardiola is arguably the best manager in the world right now and it’s easy to see why with the football Manchester City are playing. I don’t think I’ve seen anything better than the Barcelona team from 2009-11 and he didn’t do too bad with Bayern Munich either. There are high hopes around the city of Manchester right now that Pep can deliver on the biggest stage of them all in the Champions League and so far it’s looking very promising. However, domestically is this the best team we’ve seen in England?
My view is that it’s too early to say. They’re still yet to win their first trophy but they are looking very strong in all 4 competitions. A great team is one that is solid under pressure and rises to the occasion when needed. Now yes, they have done this quite a number of times this season with late winners to gain 3 points. However, the cup competitions and the Champions League are going to be the true test of pressure for this team.
The Premier League appears to already be over with a 15 point gap separating City and United. They’re currently undefeated and don’t look like losing any time soon. If they can replicate an undefeated season like Arsenal back in 2004 then the case of being the best team in England ever will be a lot stronger. It can always be difficult to compare eras but from my point of view they are playing the best football I’ve ever seen in England.
Their passing, movement off the ball and pressure that they put on the other team in defence is on a whole new level to what we’ve seen. This has to come down to the demands of Pep Guardiola because we haven’t witnessed this from the players he’s got in the past. The work rates of players such as Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne, Fabian Delph and many more have dramatically increased this season and the answer just has to be Pep.
He has improved every single one of his players which to me is what makes an excellent manager. So with the best manager in the world and a world class squad, this team certainly has the potential to be the best we’ve seen in the Premier League. If they can win at least 2 trophies this season and maintain their level of performance for years to come, then in my opinion we would be witnessing something very special – the greatest team to ever play football in England.
