How to improve your discipline to train

Discipline is the key to success in pursuing a career in football

How often do you train by yourself and improve your own skills? Are you able to spend hours and hours alone, with a ball at your feet working on your skills? To make it as a professional footballer, this is what you have to do! Even when you don't feel like doing it, are you able to push through and train anyway?

Discipline in my view is the act of doing something, even when you don't feel like it. If you are disciplined with your training, how you feel should be irrelevant when it comes to completing the session or not. Many players say they want to be professional footballers or play at a high level but they aren't disciplined enough to put in the hard work and train by themselves for hours on end.

If you can find they key within your own mind that switches on your discipline, then you'll be much more likely to make it to the top level. What do all the people with a high level of discipline have in common? They have their WHY! They know exactly the reason why they're putting in the hard work to practice their craft. You need to figure out why it is that you want to put in the work and train hard by yourself.

To say, "my why is to be a professional footballer,' is not enough. You need to know why you want to be a professional footballer. Is it for the money, fame or do you love the game so much that you can't see yourself doing anything else. When your 'why' is strong enough, you will have the discipline to train because you have clarity on your end goal.

A great example of this is Luis Suarez. In an interview whilst he was at Liverpool he expressed that he "had to become a professional footballer because he had no other option to help his family." His 'why' was to help his family get out of poverty. This is a very strong reason which allowed him to have the discipline to work hard.

What's your why? The most important thing you can do before you begin to train hard by yourself is to figure this out. Once you've got it, you'll find it's much easier to stay disciplined than before. Always remember, the people who make it and are successful in anything are always the ones who are disciplined.
